Back in 2002 Square Enix and Disney released a video game called Kingdom Hearts. It was a unique game because it combined Square's Final Fantasy characters and elements and Disney's characters. I remember seeing the commercials for it and being super excited about the game. In fact I was so excited that before even having a Playstation 2 and being able to play it I bought a strategy guide just so I could read about it. I didn't do that for any game prior to that. But I was really impressed with what I was reading, and just knew this would be a major game for me. And boy was I right.
The game starts off with friends Sora, Riku, and Kairi wanting to escape their world, the Destiny
Islands, and go to other worlds. But they don't know the events that occurred before they were older. Three Keyblade Warriors of the past, ten years ago, pursued and defeated a man named Xehanort, a Keyblade master at the time. Before they fought their former master, Terra performed a Keyblade passing with Riku, to ensure he would get a Keyblade at sometime later. Aqua did the same for Kairi. Terra's body was taken over in the final battle with Xehanort, and new trouble would be started as the Master sought out the true Keyblade and his interest in the Keyblade War. Terra would live through his will in his armor, but that wouldn't come into play until a later time. He did defeat Xehanort but he would survive through Ansem and Xemnas, and would be completely revived at a later time. But all of this was not known to Sora, Riku, and Kairi. Darkness was destroying their world, the Destiny Islands. But instead of fighting the Darkness, Riku, like Terra before him, went to it and sought its power. Thus when the Keyblade was about to come to Riku as Terra decided, it went to Sora instead because of his pure heart condition.
In the meantime, Kairi had her heart stolen and became a part of Sora. Riku accepted the Darkness and went to another world, while Sora defeated a giant Heartless and eventually was pulled out away from his world. Sora would go to Traverse town and be pursued, unknown to him, by Donald Duck and Goofy. Riku ended up in Hollow Bastion, formerly Radiant Garden, and be used by the evil Maleficent to commit evil deeds. Mickey Mouse, the King of Disney Castle, is the one who sent Donald and Goofy after the "one with the Key" while he checked the problems occurring in the worlds.
Sora, Donald, and Goofy would eventually find each other and fight looking not only for Riku and Kairi, but for the King as well. King Mickey is a Keyblade Master, much like Aqua was from before. He trained under Master Yen Sid, and after his adventures 10 years ago with Terra, Aqua, and Ventus, became a great and powerful Keyblade Master. While Sora and crew made their way through the worlds, and meeting various Final Fantasy characters and making base with them, Ansem was plotting problems and wanting to discover Kingdom Hearts. Being a part of Xehanort, this comes as no surprise. Maleficent and the other Disney villains were really just pawns of Xehanort, the true villain behind all the chaos going on in the worlds. Riku continued to be a pawn to Maleficent, and Sora and crew continued to battle the heartless in search of their friends.
They would successfully make it to the End of the World, where Ansem resided. Sora, Donald, and Goofy would defeat him, sending him to his death as light emerged from Kingdom Hearts. Riku was finally let go of his problems, even as Ansem took his body over, and was with King Mickey as the two of them stayed in Kingdom Hearts. Sora was then able to meet Kairi and the Destiny Islands and have a small reunion with her, but Sora had to promise to always be with her, as he and crew parted to go find the King and Riku.
